Michael Holmes

Founder & Owner

Michael revealed his natural talent for making jewelry when he was just 12 years old doing silversmithing in shop class. Encouraged by his grandmother, who bought him a rock cutter, Michael started cutting turquoise. His craftsmanship earned the respect and admiration of local Native Americans in Southern Utah, who became his first customers. Michael spent his teenage years cutting commercially for jewelry manufacturing, and learning the arts of goldsmithing and silversmithing. He opened Mike’s Custom Jewelry at age 23, confident that he could succeed by providing an extraordinary experience to everyone who walked through the door.

Michael’s premier skill is making custom pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind. He is committed that each piece reflects the unique purpose for which it is intended, whether it is an upcoming marriage, anniversary, graduation, or preserving a diamond that has been in the family for years.

Michael’s talent as a craftsman is matched by his gift for building trusting relationships with his customers, many of whom are now friends. He guarantees satisfaction, and goes out of his way to help people honor and celebrate the significant events and relationships in their lives.

Emerald

As the birthstone for May, the emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth. Emerald, derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in Greek, was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. Today, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Zambia. The birthstone for March is Aquamarine

The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea. This gemstone was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage. The serene color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded. Its pale, cool color beautifully complements spring and summer wardrobes. Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color usually is more intense in larger stones. This gemstone is mined mainly in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.

Amethyst is the birthstone of February:

Amethyst is a well known mineral and gemstone. It is the purple variety of the mineral Quartz, and it’s most valuable and prized variety. Its name derives from the Greek "amethystos", which means "not drunken", as Amethyst in antiquity was thought to ward off drunkenness. When used as a gemstone, Amethyst is often heat treated to deepen the color, or to transform it into Citrine. Some varieties may also change to a light green color, which is given the trade name "Prasiolite", or "Green Amethyst", as it is more commonly known in the gem trade.

Amethyst is most prevalent as small stubby pyramidal crystals, although several localities such as the Mexican occurrences are well-known for producing elegantly tall prismatic crystals, which are very highly regarded by collectors.

Garnet, the birthstone for January, signifies eternal friendship and trust and is the perfect gift for a friend. Garnet, derived from the word granatum, means seed, and is called so because of the gemstone's resemblance to a pomegranate seed. References to the gemstone dates back to 3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays jewelry. Garnet is the name of a group of minerals that comes in a rainbow of colors, from the deep red of the pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of tsavorites. Today, the most important sources for garnet are Africa, Sri Lanka, and India.
